Manny Pacquiao is on the cover of Newsweek Philippine and Latin American editions

Pound for Pound King Manny Pacquiao, Saranggani Congressman, an actor, a host and a singer is on the cover of Newsweek Philippine and Latin American editions.

Pacquaio got another title – The Godfather!

The title of this cover story for Newsweek Philippines and Latin America is about our very own Manny Pacquiao, who is described as the Filipino boxing champ and lawmaker as the "pound-for-pound greatest fighter on earth" and "an almost religious figure, whose following is ecstatically cult-like."

Lawrence Osborne covered how Pacquiao rose to popularity, how the current most popular boxing champion in the world spends his time outside the ring and how he amazingly crossed the boundaries of sports.

"To call Manny Pacquiao a boxer is one of those descriptions that don't quite fly, like calling Mahatma Gandhi a Hindu lawyer," he wrote.

Osborne visited the boxer's P35 million mansion in General Santos. In an up close interview, Osborne found what he wanted to hear from Pacquiao.

"It's like being the parent of the whole Filipino people. I fulfill all my promises, unlike most politicians in this country," Pacuiao said.

"Did you enjoy the hospital ceremony this morning? Sarangani, the place I grew up, doesn't even have a hospital, not even one – 500,000 people and no hospital. So I built a hospital. Remember, I don't need to enter politics. I have all the money I need. I could just be enjoying myself. But I have a duty to the people. I want to set the new example, to change the Philippines," the People's Champ added.

Manny Pacquiao left his politics and showbiz responsibilities to prepare for his third fight against Juan Manuel Marquez on November 12, 2011.

NATIONAL ARTIST SALVADOR “BADONG” BERNAL PASSES AWAY

SALVADOR "BADONG" BERNAL PASSES AWAY

National Artist for Theater and Design Salvador "Badong" Bernal passed away today. He was 66 years old.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of a great artist," says CCP Vice-President and Artistic Director Chris Millado.  "Badong redefined scenic design in the Philippines and was a teacher and mentor to our current crop of designers. He was responsible for creating the beautiful sets and costumes that defined the aesthetics of the various ballet, theater and musical productions at the CCP and other venues," Millado continues.  "He will be greatly missed as a theater artist, mentor and friend."

Considered as the Father of Philippine Theater Design, Salvador Floro Bernal produced a brilliant body of works which have enriched Filipino original works in theater, dance and music. Since 1969, Bernal designed more than 300 productions for drama, musicals, operas and concerts such as those for Musical Theater Philippines and Opera Guild of the Philippines. He had designed period costumes for movies like Oro, Plata, Mata and Gumising Ka, Maruja and for TV commercials and calendars. Bernal was known for using indigenous and locally available materials for stage such as bamboo, abaca fabric, hemp twice raw, rattan chain links, and styrofoams in productions such as Rajah Sulayman, Abaniko, La Traviata, Tomaneg at Aniway and Pagkahaba-haba man ng Prusisyon sa Simbahan din ang Tuloy (Much Ado About Nothing).  As an acknowledged guru of contemporary Filipino theater design, Bernal created the CCP Production Design Center and organized PATDAT (Philippine Association of Theatre Designers and Technicians) in 1995. As president of PATDAT, which is also the Philippine Center of OISTAT (Organisation Internationale des Scenographes, Techniciens et Architectes du Theatre), Bernal introduced Philippine theater design to the world.

His last CCP production was the musical version of "Banaag at Sikat" with Tanghalang Pilipino.  Before his death, Bernal was working on the design of King Lear with PETA to be directed by long time friend and collaborator Felix "Nonon" Padilla.

Salvador Bernal was conferred the National Artist Award in 2003.

Necrological services will be announced later.

‘80289: 80s to the Max’ at Music Museum

THE WEB MAGAZINE: ‘80289: 80s to the Max’ at Music Museum

GEAR up your shoulder pads, chain belts, and high-waist jeans and re-live the unforgettable era of the 80s in Artsy Productions & Promotions’ maiden presentation “80289: 80s Music To The Max” which happens at the Music Museum on Nov. 11 (Friday), 18 (Friday), & 19 (Saturday).

“80289: 80s Music To The Max” is a grand musical tribute to the 80s which features six of the most iconic OPM artists of the decade namely: Lou Bonnevie, Gino Padilla, Jamie Rivera, Chad Borja, Ella May Saison, and Juan Miguel Salvador.

Lou Bonnevie launched her musical career in 1984 via the concert “Next In Line.” Music lovers remember Lou for rock ballads with such passion that her voice doesn’t only weep, it bleeds! Lou is one of the few female performers who can come up with the same intensity in both vocal prowess and performance. Lou is currently swinging from “live” performing to producing music festivals, concerts, albums, and operas. Working behind the scenes provides the correct pace in her career, giving her room for more creation and inspiration. With her wit, charm, and talent, Lou definitely belongs to a rare breed of artists who live the art and not just cry it out.

Gino Padilla’s big break was in a softdrink commercial that was shot in Hollywood, California where he had a duet with the legendary Tina Turner in Pepsi’s “In The Mood For Movin’.” He then went on to record a toothpaste jingle for Close-up which earned him 2 major Awit Awards: Best in Ballad Recording and Song of the Year. Gino’s greatest hits include “Closer You and I,” “Gusto Kita,” “I Believe In You,” and “Let The Love Begin” which became certified Gold and Platinum.

Jamie Rivera gained worldwide recognition when she played the role of Kim in Cameron Mackintosh’s award-winning musicale “Miss Saigon.” Jamie’s actual training began when she joined the Metropolitan Theater Chorus in 1985. She recorded her first full-length studio album under Octo Arts International entitled “Hey, It’s Me” in 1986 and she did five full-length albums for the same label since then. Her hits include “Mahal Naman Kita,” “I’ve Fallen For You,” and “Awit Para Sa Iyo” among many others. Today, Jamie is the country’s undisputed Inspirational Diva, touching the hearts of millions of Filipinos with such songs as “Tanging Yaman” and “Jubilee Song.”

Chad Borja started his career in the 80s as one of the most prominent lead vocalists of several bands such as The New Minstrels, Zee, and Counterpoint Band. His first album “All About Love” produced the hit single “Ikaw Lang” which spawned a blockbuster movie starring Vilma Santos, Ronnie Rickettes, and Cesar Montano. His self-titled follow up album was produced by Richard Merk and was a massive commercial success! After a bout with cancer in 1998, Chad Borja is singing again! Chad was sidelined from performing live for nearly a year due to thyroid cancer. After throat operation and radiation therapy, the balladeer was declared cancer-free and returned to the stage with a series of sold-out performances!

Ella May Saison sings with a powerful voice that captivates her audience. A voice so effective, you will wan tto hear it again and again. Signing since the age of 7, Ella May combines various vocal styles including jazz, gospel, and blues. She started her recording career at 19. Her greatest hits include “Till My Heartache Ends” and “If The Feeling Is Gone” among many others. Her soulful voice earned her the title of “Manila’s Queen of Soul” following her best selling albums “Language of Soul” and “Full of Love, Full of Soul.”

In 1981, Juan Miguel became a finalist during the 4th Metro manila Pop Festival with his original composition, “Magkaisa, Ikaw, Ako, Lahat”, sung by Eugene Villaluz. In 1984 he won a Cecil Award for Best Jazz Composition for his song “Why”, sung by Jacqui Magno.

It was in 1983, Juan Miguel became not just a member/vocalist, but the bands’ Musical Director and keyboardist as well. Of the band called “Rage”. The Rage Band soon became a spear-header and one of the most popular rock acts of the 80’s. The Rage took “live” performing to a different level. In 5 years, they had performed in every major coliseum and theater all over the Philippines; guested in practically every popular TV show; was awarded “Best New Artist” in 1984 by the Guillermo Mendoza Foundation; Was featured in several TV commercials; and had performed in foreign countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Korea and Taiwan. Simply put, Rage is now considered an 80’s Icon.

Toto Gentica , whose musical career traces back to the 80’s with significant collaborations with Gary Valenciano , Kuh ledesma , Zsa Zsa Padilla and Lou Bonnevie will be the show’s music & artistic director.

This 3-hour musical extravaganza will also features a 10 pc band of veteran and current industry players with three lovely back up singers dubbed “Filipinas”. The cast will be supported by ten dancers as it documents the definitive images and sounds of the 80s – from its greatest hits both locally and internationally, a montage of its most memorable movies, the most romantic and thrilling duets, the famed 80s Punk and New Wave genres, the 80s New Romantic Set, the greatest girl groups, as well as songs of the greatest 80s icons among many others. This ultimate 80s musical event culminates with a grand party as powered by the most danceable tunes of the decade!

The concert will also feature surprise guest appearances of some 80’s icons.

Peter Pan opens September 30

The timeless tale about "the boy who never grew up" is reborn.

Come and join us on a thrilling musical journey to " Never Land " as Sir James Barrie's classic legend is magically brought to life in the spectacular Asian premiere of "Peter Pan – A Musical Adventure" set to open on September 30, 2011 at the Meralco Theater.

The legend of Peter Pan has been delighting children for over 100 years. This faithful new version which will be first seen in Asia, promises to be a festive adventure with stunning scenery, show-stopping performances, swashbuckling sword fights, jaw dropping and breath-taking flying scenes.

Produced by Repertory Philippines and Stages Production Specialists, "Peter Pan – A Musical Adventure" with book by the late Willis Hall and music and lyrics by award-winning duo George Stiles and Anthony Drewe (Broadway's "Mary Poppins" and "Honk!," among other works) is a charm f a musical with its ability to generate a real sense of magic and wonder.

The musical opened in Denmark, Copenhagen in 1996 and won two top awards for Best Song ("When I Kill Peter Pan") and The Orchestra's Award at the International Musical Of The Year. The production was first broadcast in 2001 as a New Year's Eve concert on BBC Radio 3 and was later presented at Festival Hall in the 2002-2003 Christmas period. Since then, Stiles & Drewe extensively revised the show for a stunning new production with its United Kingdom theatre premiere. In 2007-2008, the show played at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, directed by Rachel Kavanaugh and a year later, it moved to the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

The musical is set in bustling Edwardian suburbia, and the normality of a children's nursery. The magic really starts with the ingenious introduction of Tinkerbell, a tiny dot of light zipping around and disrupting the toys. Peter and the Darling family are whisked away to the famous land full of colorful characters including the Lost Boys, Mermaids, Crocodile, Tiger Lily and, of course, the dastardly Captain Hook.

Theater stalwarts Jaime del Mundo and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo shall sprinkle a touch of fairy dust and put together their creative artistry as co-directors of this musical. With an amazingly talented cast and production team, rehearsals for this year's musical spectacular have commenced and the show is already starting to come together.

The all-star cast will have audiences hooked as Sam Concepcion marks his role as Peter Pan – an athletic young boy full of energy, commanding, yet sensitive leader of the Lost boys.

Michael Williams is Captain Hook, a delightfully evil character & nemesis to Peter.

Jaime del Mundo is Mr. George Darling, a stern and unimaginative but loving father. Pinky Marquez is the gentle and caring mother, Mrs. Mary Darling.

Tippy Dos Santos and Cara Barredo alternate as Wendy Moira Angela Darling, the eldest of the Darling children. A very pleasant and charming girl who takes on role of "mother" to the lost boys.

Nacho Tambunting and Luigi Quesada play the role of John Darling, Wendy's younger brother, a bookish young teen-ager who has always dreamed of being in a big adventure.

Juan Miguel Santos and Alessa Zialcita play the role of Michael Darling, the typical youngest child who doesn't want to miss what everyone else is doing.

Robie Zialcita is Smee, Captain Hook's comedic sidekick. A character in direct contrast to Hook in appearance and physical stature.

Kakki Teodoro is Tiger Lily – a cute, perky, willful princess of the Indian tribe.

Joy Virata is the older Wendy Darling and the play's Narrator.

The Lost Boys of Never Land will be played by George Schulze, Kevin Concepcion, Jay Pangilinan, Bym Buhain, Justin Valiente, Nelsito Gomez, Hans Braga and Eric Mercado while the Pirates will be played by James Stacey, Hans Eckstein, Edu Briones, Meynard Peñalosa, Kuya Manzano, Chino Veguillas and Reymund Domingo.

Tinker Bell – a fairy, represented only by a tiny flashing light is played by Kyla Rivera. Her "dialogue" is only heard as tinkling music. She does not speak as we know it, and the other characters "translate" what she "says".

"Peter Pan – A Musical Adventure" is a perfect treat for the whole family.

"Peter Pan – A Musical Adventure" shall run from September 30 – October 30, 2011 with shows on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and matinee shows on Saturdays and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. All performances are at the Meralco Theater, Ortigas Avenue, Pasig City.

The artistic and creative team of "Peter Pan" is led by Baby Barredo (Artistic Director), Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo (Associate Artistic Director), Audie Gemora (President of STAGES), Jaime del Mundo / Menchu Lauchengco- Yulo (Directors), John Batalla (Lighting Designer), Gino Gonzales (Set Designer), Raven Ong (Costume Designer).

"Peter Pan's" production staff is composed of Gidget Tolentino (Production Manager) assisted by Jingay Kaimo of STAGES, Ayam Barredo (Company Manager), Ed Lacson (Stage Manager) and Adul Lasin (Set Execution and Scenic Artist).

The marketing, sales and publicity of "Peter Pan" is led by Toots Tolentino (PR & Publicity-Rep) and Gian Carlo Vizcarra (STAGES), with Rem Zamora, Ayam Barredo and Oliver Usison (PR & Publicity, Marketing), Carlo Orosa (Head of Marketing – STAGES), Cherry Bong Edralin (Sales – STAGES), Marie Talay and Rose Silva (Marketing & Sales) and Raul Montesa and Jojit Lorenzo (Photography).

The show is now open for reservations for limited slots only for corporate shows, schools and different organizations. For inquiries and other information, call Repertory Philippines at 571-6926 and 571-4941 or email info@repertory.ph. Tickets are also available at Ticketworld at 891-9999 or www.ticketworld.com.ph. "Peter Pan" is presented by special arrangement with Macnaughton Lord 2000 Ltd.

Alodia’s Warm Winter Symphony: Winter Sonata -- the animated series

Animax launches Winter Sonata-- the animated series

Winter just got warmer as Animax launches Winter Sonata- the anime.

Making its debut in South East Asia, Animax recently launched the anime version of Winter Sonata, the drama that triggered the Korean wave not just in the Philippines but in other countries as well.

In an event held at the Korean Cultural Center in Bonifacio Global City, the leading animation channel celebrated the arrival of this much-awaited series by holding a piano recital featuring Animax's very own Ani-mate, Alodia Gosengfiao, playing the show's iconic theme, "From Beginning 'Til End". Another part of the event allowed members of the press and anime bloggers to catch the first two episodes of the animation series.

Ms. Maria Ong, Marketing Manager of Animax Asia, graced the event that also included a mini-contest and late-luncheon. Ms. Ong who flew all the way from Singapore expressed her delight and excitement over the showing of the animation and was even gracious enough to allow an interview after the event.

The animated series

The much-anticipated animated adaptation of Winter Sonata brings back 23 of the original cast members, headed by Bae Yong Jun as Kang Joon-sang and Choi Ji Woo as Jung Yu-jin, to play the same characters they did on the K-drama.

Trying hard not to offend loyal fans of the Korean series, the anime version draws much of its visuals from the original drama including memorable episodes and looks of the characters. True enough, a lot of the scenes in the anime are very reminiscent of scenes from the original version.

In addition to reliving the tears, laughter and memories of Winter Sonata, fans can also look forward to the conclusion of the anime series that will feature a new live-action drama epilogue not aired during the original drama series.

A winter love story

Based on the 2002 original Korean drama that captured the hearts of millions worldwide, the anime version of this epic romance tells the tragic love story of Jung Yu-Jin and Kang Joon-sang. Both met and became friends while in high school. Drawn together by a series of events both happy and sad, it didn't take long for the two to fall in love with each other.

Tragedy strikes and in an event that tested the faith of both characters, one accident left Yu-Jin believing that Joon-sang was dead while the later had his memory erased. How will things play out for this couple who were torn apart during a cold winter's night?

Winter Sonata premiers on September 20, 2011 at 6:50 PM. Regular showing is during weekdays at 7:00 PM only on Animax.
