Longmeadow's Steven Purugganan and his brothers Brian and Andrew are on Team USA in the World Sport Stacking Association. Steven, the World Champion, is the 22News Athlete of the Week.The 10-year-old broke two of his own world records at the World Championships of Sport Stacking in early April. Purugganan beat more than 1000 competitors of all-ages.
Purugganan says it feels "really good" to be the fastest in the world. Purugganan practices for 1 hour every day, but only started two years ago. He started when he saw the 2006 world championships on ESPN. Their family went out to Target and bought a set of speed stacks and he got better and better every day.
In the time it takes a telephone to ring just once, Steve can stack and unstack 12 cups. His world record is 1.86 seconds in the 3-3-3 event. Purugganan's next goal is to complete the cycle, another event in which he holds the world record, in less than 6 seconds.WWLP
